Copyright Assignment Agreement

Working with Graphic Designers

or other third parties?

There is a common misconception that if you pay someone to create something for you, you are the owner of that something. This is not how copyrights work in the United States. Just because you pay for it doesn’t make it yours. The person who brings your idea to life owns the copyrights to it unless they are an employee doing work in the scope of their employment. Use the Copyright Assignment to transfer their rights to you.

Use an Copyright Assignment Agreement if…

  • you are working with a virtual assistant who will create content for you (and your virtual agreement does not mention intellectual property
  • you hire a graphic designer to create your logo or other work
  • you’re using Fiverr, Upwork, or other freelancer sites
